An Introduction to Christian Belief
Christian belief centers on faith in God as revealed through Jesus Christ, the Bible, and the work of the Holy Spirit. While different Christian traditions vary in emphasis and practice, they share a number of core convictions about God, humanity, salvation, and the purpose of life.
1. Belief in One God
Christians affirm belief in one God, who is the creator of all things and is both personal and relational. This God is understood to be:
- All-powerful – able to create, sustain, and govern the universe.
- All-knowing – fully aware of all things, including human thoughts and motives.
- All-loving – fundamentally good, just, and merciful in all ways.
Christian faith holds that God is not distant or impersonal but actively involved in the world and in the lives of individual people.
2. The Trinity
A distinctive aspect of Christian belief is the doctrine of the Trinity. Christians believe that the one God exists eternally as three persons:
- God the Father – the source and sustainer of all.
- God the Son (Jesus Christ) – fully God and fully human, who entered history to redeem humanity.
- God the Holy Spirit – God present and active in the world, guiding, empowering, and transforming believers.
This is not belief in three gods, but in one God in three persons, united in love and purpose.
3. Jesus Christ
At the center of Christian belief is the person of Jesus Christ. Christians confess that:
- Jesus is the Son of God, who became human through the incarnation.
- He lived a sinless life, teaching about the kingdom of God and demonstrating God’s character.
- He was crucified under Roman authority and died a real human death.
- He rose from the dead on the third day, conquering sin and death.
- He ascended to heaven and will come again to judge and renew all things.
Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, Christians believe that God offers forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life.
4. The Human Condition
Christian belief teaches that human beings are created in the image of God and therefore possess dignity, value, and purpose. At the same time, humanity is marked by brokenness and sin:
- Created good – humans are made for relationship with God and with one another.
- Fallen – through disobedience and self-centeredness, people turn away from God.
- In need of redemption – humans cannot fully heal this brokenness on their own.
Sin is understood not only as individual wrongdoing, but as a deep pattern of turning away from God’s will and love.
5. Salvation by Grace through Faith
A key Christian conviction is that salvation is a gift of God’s grace, not something earned by human effort. Christians believe that:
- God takes the initiative to restore the broken relationship with humanity.
- Jesus’ death and resurrection provide the basis for forgiveness and new life.
- People are invited to respond in faith, trusting in Christ and turning from sin.
Grace is God’s unmerited favor, freely given. Faith is a personal trust and commitment to Jesus, not merely intellectual agreement.
6. The Bible
The Bible is regarded by Christians as sacred Scripture and the primary written witness to God’s revelation. Christian belief holds that:
- The Bible is composed of the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- It records God’s dealings with Israel and the early church.
- It is inspired by God and useful for teaching, correction, and spiritual growth.
Christians read the Bible in the light of Jesus Christ, seeing him as the fulfillment of God’s promises.
7. The Church
Christian belief is not only individual but communal. The church is understood as:
- The community of all who trust in Christ across time and place.
- A body in which each person has gifts to serve others.
- A worshiping community that proclaims the gospel and lives out God’s love.
The church gathers for worship, prayer, teaching, and the sacraments, and is sent into the world to serve and bear witness to Christ.
8. Christian Life and Ethics
To believe in Christ involves a transformed way of life. Central aspects of Christian living include:
- Love of God – worship, prayer, and obedience to God’s will.
- Love of neighbor – compassion, justice, forgiveness, and care for the vulnerable.
- Growth in holiness – becoming more like Christ in character and conduct.
Christians see ethical living not as a way to earn God’s favor, but as a grateful response to God’s grace.
9. Hope and the Future
Christian belief includes a strong hope for the future. This hope is grounded in God’s promises and in Christ’s resurrection. Christians look forward to:
- The ultimate defeat of evil, suffering, and death.
- The renewal of creation and the establishment of God’s kingdom in fullness.
- Eternal life in God’s presence, characterized by joy, peace, and love.
This hope shapes how Christians live in the present, encouraging perseverance, courage, and faithfulness even amid hardship.
10. An Invitation to Explore
An introduction to Christian belief is just a beginning. Many people approach these beliefs from different backgrounds, questions, and experiences. Christianity invites ongoing exploration through:
- Reading and reflecting on the Bible.
- Participating in a Christian community or local church.
- Prayer and personal reflection on God and life’s meaning.
For those who are curious, Christian belief offers a way of understanding God, the world, and ourselves that is centered on Jesus Christ and marked by faith, hope, and love.
